Bright syrupy amber, with a head of tiny bubbles that dissipate quickly. The aroma is killing me. Clementine and honey, altered by some umami scent (mixed butter and jam?) Caramel. Yum. Wait, I've got it: it's popcorn! Intriguing anonymous super-fruit flavor, like a peach/navel orange/banana hybrid. Sweet middle. Bitter finish is straight-up pith of lemon. Medium-bodied, smooth, sticky, and sweet. Sure, the hops rule, but they're nearly shown up by the sweet, bready malt. Finishes medium-dry. A masterpiece of balance.

  noteHad this before Hypatia costume party. Much, much better than last sampling. It's so much better, I can't even imagine what went wrong with that last sampling -- maybe something I ate. Such earthy tastiness. Excellent fruit-sweetness. Reminds me of that very fruit-sweet IIPA, ____________. Despite it pouring in a viscous stream of Penzoil, it's got great mouthfeel. Good fizz, yet creamy.

  noteUh, oh. This was not great. I should've been testing these bi-monthly. This beer about 11 mos. old, and the cellar has not treated it well. It seems like this would've been ideal at 8 months, or so. Unlike with Lupulin Maximus, whose oxidation is becoming of that beer. Sad. It's certainly not a drain pour. It's still pretty good. Oh, well. Gonna have to drink all these in short order.

Bright syrupy amber, with a head of tiny bubbles that dissipate quickly. The aroma is killing me. Clementine and honey, altered by some umami scent (mixed butter and jam?) Caramel. Yum. Wait, I've got it: it's popcorn! Intriguing anonymous super-fruit flavor, like a peach/navel orange/banana hybrid. Sweet middle. Bitter finish is straight-up pith of lemon. Medium-bodied, smooth, sticky, and sweet. Sure, the hops rule, but they're nearly shown up by the sweet, bready malt. Finishes medium-dry. A masterpiece of balance.

It's a one of a kind IIPA, for certain. Mouthfeel is crazily syrupy, yet leavened by significant fizz. Like a Sauterne crossed with a moscato di asti. It's just elite-quality beer.   descriptionHere at Left Coast Brewing Co. we pride ourselves on being one of the first breweries to pioneer a Double IPA style beer. In 2003, we brewed our first Double IPA, and haven't looked back since. This hop monster uses Premium American 2- Row and a touch of light crystal malt to create a solid malt foundation. The recipe calls for hops to be used in every step of the brewing process; in the mash, in a hop back, in the fermenter, and in the bright tanks. We use hop extract, hop pellets and hop flowers, hence the name Hop Juice. Hop Juice spends more than 4 weeks dry hopping in the fermenter and the bright beer tank. It is approximately 9.4% abv and has massive IBUs. Hop usage is over 4lbs per barrel. Hopeheads, step up to the plate!

  noteI'm not even going to write up how disappointed I am with this. (Even more disappointed than with an one-year aged Whole Hog Barley Wine!) However, others have aged this over a period of 3 years, and their results for Year 3 are really encouraging. So maybe Year 2 is one to skip. Fingers crossed for Year 3.
